According to a new report, Manchester United are moving forward with transfer negotiations surrounding a summer move for a £58 million defensive star. Manchester United are reportedly interested in signing Paris Saint-Germain left-back Nuno Mendes in 2025, as Rúben Amorim seeks to address the defensive frailties that have plagued his team at Old Trafford....Read Full Article >>➤
United’s backline has been a major weakness under Amorim, with set-piece vulnerabilities standing out as a critical issue. Reinforcing the defence in the upcoming transfer window is expected to be a priority. The left-back position, in particular, has been a problem area for the club over the last decade. Luke Shaw, who has been the mainstay in the role, has struggled with injuries ever since his horrific leg break during a Champions League tie against PSV Eindhoven in 2015.
Tyrell Malacia, his backup, has also faced significant setbacks, recently returning from a 17-month layoff following multiple surgeries on a serious knee injury.
Diogo Dalot has deputised at left-back during their absences, but Amorim has acknowledged that Dalot is far more comfortable and effective in his natural position on the right flank.
United open talks for Mendes summer transfer
With the January transfer window now open, United are keeping one eye open for on the summer window as they look to engage in preliminary talks for Mendes.
According to Sky Sports correspondent Florian Plettenberg, there is now contact between United and Mendes’ agents as they move forward ahead of a potential summer deal.

Various reports have detailed that Mendes is not happy with the current terms PSG have offered him regarding a renewal of his contract, with the 22-year-old feeling the proposed wages do not reflect his importance in the team.
However, although United are strongly interested in the young left-back, Plettenberg clarifies that three other clubs are monitoring his situation, although they aren’t named.
Further, it’s said that PSG are still keen to keep Mendes despite his current refusal of a new deal, and will press for him to extend beyond his 2026 contract.
Mendes transfer price is quite steep
Although United’s interest is evident, they are likely to hit a big stumbling block when it comes to the player’s transfer fee.
According to reports from Spain, PSG are set to demand around £58 million for the Portuguese international, and as United know, the Ligue 1 side drive a hard bargain.
United dealt with PSG last summer for the transfer of Manuel Ugarte, who signed for the Old Trafford side for an initial £42 million, with the French club standing firm until the final days of the window when United finally agreed to pay the high fee.
With the club strapped for cash, £58 million is an incredibly high amount to spend on any player, let alone a full-back and the club may be forced to explore other options, such as Alvaro Fernandez, who can be secured for as little as £16 million.
To sign Mendes United would have to sell some high-value assets, although it’s thought that almost any player is available for transfer for the right price, with very few at the club deemed untouchable.
