During a stakeholders’ meeting with Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) in Abuja on Wednesday, Tijani clarified that while an increase in call and data tariffs is imminent, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) will determine and announce the approved rates to the public.
Tijani emphasized the government’s commitment to balancing consumer protection with the need to sustain investments in the telecom sector. He highlighted the government’s intent to take a more active role in infrastructure development, reducing reliance on private companies.
“You may have noticed recent agitation from telecom companies requesting a 100% tariff hike. However, this will not happen. The NCC is conducting a study and will provide clear directives on the adjustment,” he explained.
He added, “Our goal is to protect Nigerians while ensuring these companies can continue making substantial investments. The focus should not only be on tariff increases but on achieving meaningful connectivity and delivering high-quality services.”
Tijani also pointed out the importance of investing in infrastructure to enhance service delivery, noting that leaving such investments solely to private companies has led to a focus on short- to medium-term returns.
Similarly, Aminu Maida, the Executive Vice-Chairman of the NCC, stressed that the meeting aimed to address the sustainability of the telecom industry.
“We have reviewed various factors, and as the minister mentioned, a 100% tariff increase is not likely. The exact percentage is still under review, and further engagements are ongoing. Nigerians can expect a formal announcement within the next one or two weeks,” Maida stated.
He also revealed efforts to simplify tariff structures, moving away from complicated pricing models that confuse consumers. Addressing concerns about data usage, Maida explained that the NCC has been closely analyzing the issue to ensure transparency in charges.
The government and stakeholders aim to achieve a balance that supports both consumers and the growth of the telecom sector.
