IDAC spokesperson Henry Mamothame issued a brief statement addressing the situation. He confirmed that Gigaba had visited their offices in Lynnwood, Pretoria East, but emphasized that no formal charges have been filed against the former minister.
“Mr Malusi Gigaba has not been placed under arrest,” Mamothame stated clearly. “He is engaging IDAC and there will be no court appearance today. IDAC will not be commenting any further on the matter.”
The former minister’s visit to the investigating directorate marks a significant development in the broader probe into state capture-linked corruption at Transnet. The state-owned enterprise is one of several entities being investigated for corruption that occurred during the Zuma administration.
The Transnet investigation focuses on irregular contracts and questionable payments worth billions of rands. Central to the probe is the R54 billion locomotive procurement deal that was awarded during Gigaba’s tenure as Minister of Public Enterprises between 2010 and 2014.
Several former Transnet executives have already faced legal consequences in connection with the investigation. Former executives Brian Molefe and Anoj Singh have both appeared in court on fraud and corruption charges related to the same matter.
