JUST IN: Policemen Fired Teargas At Polling Stations, Disrupted Council Elections In Port Harcourt – Witnesses
On Saturday, October 5, some policemen allegedly teargassed voter stations at Elekahia Primary School in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, disrupting the local government elections. Approximately 20 patrol vans filled with the heavily armed personnel arrived at the scene, where officers fired teargas into the premises while voting was underway, witnesses said. Voting commenced in the early hours of Saturday across several LGAs, with voters casting ballots in some polling units while others awaited the arrival of election materials. An explosion reportedly occurred hours before the election at the secretariat of the All Progressives Congress faction led by Tony Okocha, the ex-chairman of the APC caretaker committee in the state.
Tensions have risen in Rivers due to the ongoing power struggle between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
On September 30, a Federal High Court in Abuja barred the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from releasing the 2023 voter register to RSIEC.
The court also prohibited the Inspector-General of Police and the Department of State Services (DSS) from providing security for the election. On October 2, INEC confirmed it had not released the voter register to RSIEC in compliance with the court’s ruling.
On October 3, a crowd gathered at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secretariat in Port Harcourt to protest against the planned local government election. However, Fubara reiterated his commitment to proceed with the election.
On Friday, Fubara visited the RSIEC office in Port Harcourt amid claims that police officers intended to halt the election. Police operatives had barricaded the facility where electoral materials were stored.
Fubara stated that the presence of police officers at the RSIEC premises was unnecessary, accusing the Inspector-General of Police of taking orders from Wike to disrupt the election.
In response to Fubara’s remarks, the Nigeria Police Force asserted that its actions in Rivers complied with the judgment of the Federal High Court.

The swearing in of the newly elected chairmen would hold at the Executive Council Chambers of the state’s Government House in Port Harcourt, by 4:00 pm.
This was disclosed via a statement by the Secretary to the State Government, Tammy Danagogo.
The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission, RSIEC, declared the winners of the local government elections, with 22 of 23 LGAs won by the Action Peoples Party (APP).
The statement reads: “His Excellency, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, GSSRS, the Governor of Rivers State, will today Sunday, October 6, 2024, swear-in the newly elected Council Chairmen at the Executive Council Chambers, Government House, Port Harcourt, by 4:00 pm.
“The newly elected Chairmen, along with one (1) guest each, are expected to be seated by 3:30 pm.”
The Senate Minority Leader, Comrade Abba Moro has rejected the local government election conducted in Benue State on Saturday, 5th October, describing it as a sham and an insult to democracy.....Read Full Article>>
DAILY POST earlier reported that Benue State Independent Electoral Commission, BSIEC, on Sunday declared the All Progressives Congress, APC winner of all the 23 LGAs.
Reacting, Moro, the senator representing Benue South Senatorial District, said in a statement by his media aide, Emmanuel Eche’Ofun John, that reports from polling units across his senatorial district indicate that elections did not hold.
According to him, election materials and officials of the Benue State Independent Electoral Commission, BSIEC “were not seen anywhere except in the premises of APC leaders where ballots were thumb-printed for their candidates”.
The senator expressed disappointment in the state governor, Hyacinth Alia, “for not standing by the truth and due process as promised during his electioneering campaign”.
Moro said he expected the governor, as a priest, to push for a paradigm shift by doing what’s right, and not referencing and copying what was wrongly done in the past.
He said democracy was fiercely fought for, with some people paying the supreme price, stating that anti-democratic forces will not be allowed to destroy the system.

As Israel intensifies its airstrikes in Lebanon, the Nigerian government has commenced preparations to evacuate its citizens from the conflict zone.
In a statement issued on Saturday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Ambassador Eche Abu-Obe, the government confirmed that the Nigerian Embassy in Lebanon has been actively working to ensure the safety of Nigerians.
The statement emphasized the government’s commitment to protecting its nationals during the crisis.
“The Federal Government has begun preparations to evacuate its citizens from Lebanon. It is pertinent to mention that no Nigerian life has been lost since the beginning of the conflict,” the statement read.
The Ministry added that the Nigerian Embassy had previously advised citizens in Lebanon to voluntarily evacuate, with commercial flights still operational.
Those in southern Lebanon, where the fighting has been most intense, were relocated to safer areas, such as Beirut, with the help of community leaders.
The government reassured Nigerians FG set to begin evacuation of Nigerians from Lebanonit is in contact with relevant stakeholders and is committed to ensuring the safe return of all its citizens.
This comes as the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah escalates, with Israeli airstrikes targeting Hezbollah strongholds across Lebanon and ground troops conducting operations near the border.
The violence, which has continued for nearly a year, has now evolved into full-scale warfare.
