This was disclosed in a statement issued on Saturday by the Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Idongesit Etiebet, in Uyo. The commissioner revealed that she conducted an unscheduled visit to the school after the video surfaced online, sparking outrage over the poor quality of meals provided to students.

She announced the immediate suspension of the school’s principal, Dr. Nse Sunday Umoh, pending the outcome of the investigation.

“Following the very disturbing video where students were fed with unpalatable and non-nutritious meals at Presbyterian Senior Science College, Ididep, I paid an unscheduled visit to the school,” she said.

“I have directed a comprehensive investigation into the state of boarding facilities in the school and the other 25 boarding secondary schools across the state. This review, which will focus on hostels, dining halls, recreation areas, menus, kitchens, and sanitary facilities, will be jointly overseen by the Permanent Secretaries of the Ministry of Education and the State Secondary Education Board.”

Etiebet stressed that while the state’s free education policy covered tuition fees but not boarding expenses, the welfare and dignity of students in public schools remained a top priority for Governor Umo Eno’s administration.

She added, “We appeal to parents who have already been greatly relieved of the burden of tuition fees to undertake basic parental responsibilities to support their children in secondary schools.”

The commissioner reaffirmed the government’s commitment to raising the standard of education and ensuring public school facilities meet acceptable standards.

“The government is determined to ensure that all public school facilities meet irreducible minimum standards that uphold the well-being of both learners and staff,” she said.

She also appealed for patience from the public as the investigation unfolds, adding that the administration remained committed to delivering quality education under the ARISE Agenda.

According to sources, Orijifor was apprehended earlier today at her residence in Wonderland Estate, Abuja, after police officers had waited for over five hours for her to come out.

She reportedly locked herself in her bedroom and made calls to influential political figures in a bid to avoid arrest. Iran is gearing up to “respond” to Israel’s recent attacks, according to Ali Larijani, a senior adviser to Iran’s supreme leader, as reported by Iran’s Tasnim news agency on Sunday.

This comes after Israeli fighter jets launched a series of attacks on Iranian military targets on October 26, which was preceded by Iran firing around 200 ballistic missiles at Israel a few weeks prior. Iran has repeatedly vowed to retaliate against Israel’s attacks, and it seems they’re now preparing to make good on that promise.

On October 26, Israeli Defence Forces struck military sites in Iran, saying it was retaliating against Tehran’s missile attack on Israel.

Hours later, the Israeli military said it had completed the strikes and achieved its objectives, warning Iran not to respond.

A semi-official Iranian news agency vowed a “proportional reaction” to the Israeli moves against Tehran.

Iranian media reported multiple explosions over several hours in the capital and at nearby military bases, starting shortly after 2am.

Before dawn, Israel’s public broadcaster said three waves of strikes had been completed and that the operation was over.

Iran said its air defence system successfully countered Israel’s attacks on military targets in the provinces of Tehran, Khuzestan and Ilam with “limited damage” to some locations.

Tensions between arch rivals Israel and Iran escalated after Hamas, the Iran-backed Palestinian militant group based in Gaza, attacked Israel on October 7, 2023. Hamas has been supported by Lebanon-based Hezbollah militants, also backed by Iran.

“We have to decentralise power. The power of the central government has become so much. “We have to find a way of decentralisation; it’s not necessarily by creating 50 more states or 200 more local governments, but those things that could be done competently like education, agriculture, and others, let the state take charge.

“It’s not by accident that power has become so concentrated at the centre; it is the prolonged military rule.

“They (heads of state) nominate governors and so on. But now, we are in a democracy, and I sincerely believe that we have to take a second look at that so that matters that don’t need to be on the exclusive or concurrent lists are not there.

“We must strengthen local government authorities. The local government autonomy is a good step but it is not just about money because if you don’t strengthen the capacities of the local governments and also the process as to which people become chairmen of local governments, you can throw money there, and it goes down the drain,” he said.

According to the elder statesman, all Nigerians have a stake in the unity of Nigeria, its stability and its progress.

The diplomat added that the future of Africa depends on Nigeria, stressing that based on the United Nations’ statement, Nigeria will become the most populous country in the world by 2050.

In a letter addressed to the current CJN, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, on Sunday, Clark praised the Court of Appeal for acquitting Onnoghen of false asset declaration charges, a case he described as unjust.

He condemned the circumstances surrounding Onnoghen’s suspension, which he said violated constitutional provisions requiring the involvement of the National Judicial Council and the National Assembly in such decisions.

Reflecting on the 2019 election, Clark claimed that Onnoghen’s removal was planned to eliminate any opposition to alleged manipulations.

He said, “As for the former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, in his own case, ‘a Daniel has come to judgment’. I knew he was not fairly treated; he was oppressed and humiliated by President Muhammadu Buhari and his Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN).

“At this juncture, let me say this: President Tinubu’s government must not allow sacred cows to exist in Nigeria, no matter whose ox is gored. There is no one who is above the law in his own country. A president of a country is just one of the ordinary members in the country, but once elected, enjoys immunity. There is nowhere therefore in the constitution or any legal document where it is stated that immunity is for life.

“Today in Nigeria, we have corrupt Presidents and some of them today are accusing their successors of corruption without looking back at what they themselves stole while in office but no one dares to touch them. Perhaps, it is an irony of fate for the former CJN, Justice Walter Onnoghen, who was one of the Supreme Court Justices whose judgment favored President Muhammadu Buhari in his presidential election case in the Supreme Court in 2011.”

“He (Buhari) allowed him to rise to the post of CJN but he saw that, that was not good enough for him because if Justice Onnoghen was to remain the CJN, the mess and mischievous things they wanted to carry out during the presidential election in 2019, Justice Onnoghen would not accept it and the best thing was to remove him, and this was the secret plan between President Buhari and his Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami.

“The show of shame that took place at the time was so disgraceful, callous, unjust and so barbaric that instead the President of Nigeria, who swore to an oath of office that he would maintain security and welfare of Nigerians, chose to stoop so low in order to humiliate a fellow Nigerian because he wanted to be President of Nigeria at all costs for a second term. It is a shame which Nigeria has just recovered from,” he stated.
