Broos revealed his stance during a media briefing on Thursday. His concern stems from having selected nine Pirates players in his 23-man squad for the upcoming match. The Belgian tactician is preparing his team for the Africa Cup of Nations tournament kicking off next month.
The national team coach made it clear he doesn’t want his key players in action during December. With Pirates forming nearly half of his squad, Broos fears potential injuries ahead of the continental showpiece. He specifically referenced scheduling conflicts from previous tournaments.
“Last AFCON was even worse,” Broos recalled. “They played on the 31st of December and we started preparations on the 4th of January or something like that.”
Broos expressed frustration with the Premier Soccer League’s fixture scheduling. He revealed he had requested that the Carling Knockout conclude earlier to allow adequate preparation time for AFCON.
“I asked now to stop the competition on the 4th of December but no, they have to play that final on the 6th,” he stated. “So, I am very happy. I’m sorry to say this, but I am happy that Sundowns are out and that Chiefs are out.”
The Bafana coach directly addressed the Pirates situation, saying: “I hope maybe that Pirates can be out so the guys can have a bit of rest.”
